Monkey Magic
|
Two televisions shows I was very found of in my childhood were Japanese - Monkey Magic and G-Force. I would rush home after school to catch these shows most afternoons when I was about 10 years old. These two shows represent the pinnacle of Japanese television....well to my childhood memory. They were both great shows and are considered cult classics in many countries, epically in Australia. Monkey Magic tells the tale of a priest who has been given the task of a pilgrimage to fetch holy scriptures from India and return them to China by Bodhisattva Guanyin. The priest Tripitaka is accompanied by three outcast of heaven, Monkey, the monkey king, Sandy, a Kappa-a Japanese water monster, and Pigsy, one very horny pig monster. Along their journey they face many perils and antagonists both human and supernatural. This is where the great action scenes come in and the highlight of each show. The outcasts are often called upon to battle demons, monsters and bandits, despite Tripitaka's constant call for peace. |
I guess the shows success and appeal stemmed from the humor, the magic and special effects, the actions sequences and over-the-top, but brilliant 登riental English accents of the voice actors. Recently, I tried watching an episode in Japanese, but it just wasn't the same. Then there is the music - classic Japanese 70's rock by a five piece band called Godiego. Two songs that will forever remain in my memory are the fight music 溺onkey Magic and 敵andhara, which finished the show each episode.
