Here is a typical exchange you would experience at a family restaurant in Japan. I have translated the conversation into English which you should read first. I have highlighted important set expressions. Although Japanese speak very politely when taking orders or serving customers they tend not to smile or come across as friendly . They have a "by the book" mentality that feels rather impersonal.

 

Restaurant Conversation

 

S: Welcome. How many people?

C: Two.

S: Smoking or non smoking.

C: Non-smoking

S:This way – take any open table you like.

Ordering--------------------------------------------

S: What is your order?

C: Beef steak.....

S: Yes

C: Green Salad.....

S: Yes

C: Mixed Pizza

S: Yes

C: and two “drink bars”

S: Yes. Is that your order?

C: Yes.

S: I understand. Please allow me to repeat your order; Beef steak, Green Salad, Mixed Pizza and two drink bars.

C: Yes

S: The drink bar is over there. Please wait (for your order).

 

In Japanese

S: いらっしゃいませ。　何名さまですか？

C: ２人です。

S: きつえんせき　と　きんえんせき　が　ございますが。

C: きんえんせき　で。

S:こちらへ　どうぞ。　あいている　おすきなせきへ　どうぞ。

　　グリーンサラダ　おひとつ、　ミックスピザ　おひとつ、　ドリンクバーが　おふたつ。

C: はい。

S: ドリンクバーは　あちらに　ございます。　しょうしょう　おまちください。
