Welcome to Kanji Lesson 3. More Kanji and grammar to learn. おにいちゃんへ

今日から学校が始まりました。レベルわけのテストがあって、私は、上、中、下の中級のクラスになりました。クラスにはたくさんの外国人がいて、これから一緒に学ぶのが楽しみです。

アパートは、ともだちとシェアすることにしました。シェアとはやちんを半分づつはらって、ひとつのアパートに一緒に住むことです。

勉強がんばります！

Key Points

レベルわけ

わけ is taken from the verb 分ける　which means to divide, seperate or split.

In this case, レベルわけのテスト translates to a level test.

になりました

Past tense form of なります（なる）generally meaning to become, to happen.

However, in this case we are talking about the result of the レベルわけ test.

Here, になりました means resulted in or turned out .

私は、上、中、下の中級のクラスになりました

Out of the beginner, intermediate and advanced classes it turned out that I am (will be) intermediate level class.

なる is a verb you will need to study diligently as it can have the follwing meanings depending on context.

become, get, grow, be, wish to be, grow up, turn (red), get (better), go(blind), begin to do, come to do, consist of, be composed of,be made up of, succeed, result in, turn out, prove, (season) come/set in, come to, amount to, (time) pass, elapse, be promoted to and more.

Take time to look なる up in your dictionary.

半分づつ

づつ is a particle that indicates equal distribution of quantity.

ひとつづつ	one each
ふたつづつ	two each
みつづつ	three each
半分づつ	half each

We (the two of us ) will pay half of the rent each.

やちん(rent) を半分づつ(half each) はらう(will pay)

することにしました - I have decided to do

~にする　means to decide on (something)

にする is usually preceded by a noun or a noun equivalent (すること）

このアパートにする	I have decided on this apartment
シェアすることにしました	I decided to share (past tense)

アパートは、ともだちとシェアすることにしました

I decided to share an apartment with my friend.

勉強がんばります

がんばります is the verb to do one's best.

"I will study hard" would be a suitable translation for 勉強がんばります.

When giving encouragement or expressing good luck to others

Japanese will often say がんばって　－DO YOUR BEST.
